The web has given us incredible tools and overwhelmingly easy information access, but as Scott Karp remarked today, it is also a “black hole of distraction.”

The web is broad enough now that you shouldn’t jump on to every service, have an account on every social network, or write posts on every forum. Unless your job is to evaluate a bunch of new services, I’d call that kind of early-adopter enthusiasm a big waste of time.

It sounds a bit like I’m rejecting progress, but really I’m being discerning about the web’s successes and failures. Sure value still exists on the web and new services will continue to increase efficiency and communication, but consider whether jumping into every new web fad will really serve you well in the end.

Some things are great from the start, some take a little time, and some are just never worth your time.
